Tree Warden Scheme for Emsworth

About ten or eleven years ago, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust (HWT) set up and coordinated a Tree Warden Scheme throughout Havant Borough. The scheme lapsed when HWT were no longer able to coordinate it.

However, a Tree Warden Scheme is currently being re-established in Emsworth and it is hoped this will be extended to the whole of Havant Borough.

The Tree Officers at HBC, Jamie Gargett and Andrew Skeet, fully support the scheme.

A group of 11 Emsworth residents interested in setting up a Tree Warden Scheme met in May 2006 and plans to hold another meeting in August.

A small group of interested residents of Havant Borough (including 5 from Emsworth) met Jon Stokes, the Tree Council’s representative, together with HBC’s Tree Officers at the end of June.

Training on the various aspects of being a Tree Warden will be given by Jamie Gargett and Jon Stokes later on in the year.

Projects Tree Wardens can get involved in include:

·        Organising guided Tree Walks

·        Publishing a Tree Walk leaflet

·        Tree planting and after care

·        Woodland management such as coppicing

·        Tree seed collecting

·        Setting up tree nurseries with local schools

·        Organising tree-based activities for children in school holidays

·        Planting and maintaining hedges

·        Warning the Tree Officer about threats to trees

·        Supporting the establishment of Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

·        Surveying and monitoring trees with TPOs.

‘Trees - a different perspective’

A tree walk in Hollybank Woods led by Jonathon Huet on Sunday 16 July.

This very successful walk attracted 25 people including an assorted array of adults, children and dogs.

An inspiring and magical journey of discovery during an all too short two-hour walk in the dappled sunlight of Hollybank Woods.

A mixture of story telling, traditions, tree lore and tree identification. An extraordinary exploration of the symbolic nature of trees, their medicinal uses and practical application of the varied natural resources trees supply.

Jonathon also emphasised the importance of the sympathetic maintenance and preservation of ancient woods such as Hollybank.
